The 4 patterns this check looks for

Most dog routines come down to a few simple things: daily walks, a bit of play, steady meals, treats that don’t get out of hand, and doing it most days. You answer six quick questions about your dog and your day, and you get one routine fix to start with.

  • Walks keep getting skippedWalks get squeezed out when the day gets busy.
  • Energy left overMore energy than one walk burns off.
  • Treats getting out of handEasy to do, because every one feels small.
  • No set routine for mealsMeals happen whenever the day allows.

Simple routine habits, starting today

  1. Tie one walk to something you already do, like right after your morning coffee or right after you get home. Keep the leash and bags by the door.
  2. Add a 10-minute play or sniff session on top of the walk: fetch, tug, or a slow walk where your dog gets to lead and sniff.
  3. Count out the day’s treats in the morning into a small jar and stop when it’s empty.
  4. Feed at the same two times each day, measure the food with a real measuring cup, and keep fresh water out all day.

Puppies, seniors and flat-faced breeds need shorter, gentler walks, and on hot days test the pavement with the back of your hand for 7 seconds first. For more ways to stay active together, see my Dogs and Active Living guide.

When to see your vet

This is a routine check, not veterinary advice.Check with your vet if you notice sudden changes in your dog’s appetite, energy, weight or mobility, or any vomiting or diarrhea — and before starting any supplement, especially for puppies, seniors, pregnant or nursing dogs, or dogs on medication or a prescription diet.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a simple daily routine for my dog?

Most dog routines come down to a few simple things: daily walks, a bit of play, steady meals, treats that don’t get out of hand, and doing it most days. It’s rarely about one magic product.

How do I stop skipping my dog’s walks?

Tie one walk to something you already do, like right after your morning coffee or right after you get home. Even 15–20 minutes counts. Keep the leash and bags by the door so there’s nothing to decide.

How many treats is too many?

In this check I suggest keeping treats to about 10% of the day’s food. Break treats into pea-sized pieces and use some of your dog’s regular kibble as rewards. Never share xylitol, chocolate, grapes or raisins, macadamia nuts, onion or garlic.

Does my dog need a daily supplement?

Food, walks, play and rest come first. Check with your vet before starting any supplement, especially for puppies, seniors, pregnant or nursing dogs, or dogs on medication or a prescription diet. If you’re curious, my honest LiveGood Pet Multi-Vitamin review covers it.

Is this check veterinary advice? Is it free?

It’s free general information, not veterinary advice. Enter your email at the end to see your result and get my free 14-Day No-Gimmicks Reset (walks with your dog count). You can unsubscribe anytime.
