The scale cannot tell fat from muscle. This can. Estimate your body fat percentage with the U.S. Navy tape method, no calipers, no lab, no gadgets. No email needed to see your numbers.

Grab a soft tape measure and measure over bare skin, snug but not squeezing. Stand relaxed, breathe out normally, and take each measurement twice to be sure.
Strength training and protein do the heavy lifting, always. If you want extra support alongside them, LiveGood LEAN is formulated to support metabolism, appetite control, and fat burning while you protect the lean mass you just calculated. See how it works and decide for yourself.
Next step: pair your body fat number with your daily calorie target
This calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, developed to estimate body fat for thousands of service members quickly and without equipment. It compares the circumferences where your body stores fat, the waist and hips, against the ones that reflect your frame, the neck and height.
Studies comparing it against lab methods suggest it lands within about three percentage points for most people, which makes it plenty accurate for tracking progress at home.
Why bother measuring body fat at all? Because the bathroom scale cannot tell the difference between a pound of fat lost and a pound of muscle lost, and after 35 that difference is everything. Two women can weigh exactly the same and look and feel completely different depending on their body composition. Tracking body fat percentage, even roughly, tells you whether your plan is burning the right stuff.
Competitive athlete territory. It takes serious training and disciplined eating to live here, and it is not a requirement for health, energy, or looking strong.
Lean, strong, and sustainable. For most women over 35 who train regularly and eat well, this is a realistic and rewarding place to aim.
Normal and healthy for most women. If you want to move toward the fitness range, the recipe is unchanged: a modest calorie deficit, protein at every meal, and strength training.
Within about three percentage points of lab methods for most people, which is comparable to many consumer body fat scales. Its real strength is consistency: measure the same way each month and the trend line is very reliable, and the trend is what actually matters.
Anywhere from about 21 to 31 percent covers the fitness and average ranges, and both are healthy. Women naturally and appropriately carry more fat than men; it supports hormones, and some of it is simply essential. The goal is a range you can maintain while feeling strong, not a bodybuilding stage number.
BMI only knows your height and weight, so it cannot tell a muscular woman from an under-muscled one at the same weight. Body fat percentage looks at what your weight is made of, which is a far better signal for health, strength, and how your clothes actually fit.
A realistic pace is about half a percentage point to one point per month with a modest calorie deficit, adequate protein, and strength training. Faster than that usually means you are losing muscle along with the fat, which defeats the purpose.
Yes, and it should be the explicit goal. Three levers protect muscle in a deficit: strength training two to four times a week, protein around 0.8 grams per pound of body weight, and a deficit modest enough that your body is not forced to break down muscle for fuel.
Once a month is plenty. Body fat changes slowly, and measuring more often just adds noise from water shifts and tape placement. Same day of the month, same time of day, same conditions, and write it down next to your weekly weight average.
