Can You Take L-Carnitine and CLA Together?

How each supports fat metabolism, and how to take them

You’ve got two bottles on the counter. One says L-carnitine, the other says CLA, and both promise to help with fat loss. Now you’re standing there wondering whether it’s safe to take them at the same time, whether they’ll cancel each other out, or whether doubling up is just a waste of money.

I get this question a lot from women who are already training hard and eating well and want to make sure they’re not leaving anything on the table. These two supplements get lumped together constantly, but they do completely different things in the body, and understanding that difference is the key to using them well.

So let’s walk through what each one does, whether they can be combined, and what the research honestly says about the doses that matter. In more than 20 years as a NASM-certified trainer, I’ve seen plenty of supplement stacks that made sense on paper and plenty that didn’t.

🎯Key Takeaways
  • Yes, L-carnitine and CLA can be taken together; there are no known harmful interactions between them.
  • L-carnitine helps transport fatty acids into mitochondria to be used for energy, while CLA is studied for reducing fat storage and supporting lean mass.
  • Because they act on different steps of fat metabolism, they are complementary rather than redundant.
  • Research on both shows small effects at meaningful doses, typically 2 grams or more of L-carnitine and around 3 grams of CLA daily.
  • Low amounts, such as 100 mg of each, act as supporting ingredients in a broader formula rather than doing the heavy lifting on their own.
  • LiveGood LEAN combines L-carnitine tartrate and CLA in one capsule alongside appetite and blood sugar support ingredients.

What L-Carnitine Does in Your Body

L-carnitine is a compound your body makes from the amino acids lysine and methionine. You also get it from food, mostly red meat, which is where the name comes from (carnis is Latin for flesh).

If the scale won’t budge, this is where I point people.

LEAN Body Composition Formula

LEAN works on appetite and metabolism support without stimulants — no jitters, and no crash diet attached. My review breaks down every ingredient, the honest pros and cons, and who it realistically helps.

Its main job is transport. Fatty acids can’t enter your mitochondria, the parts of your cells that produce energy, on their own. L-carnitine acts as the shuttle that carries long-chain fatty acids across the mitochondrial membrane so they can be burned for fuel.

That mechanism is why it gets marketed as a fat burner: more shuttles, more fat burned. The reality is a little more nuanced.

L-carnitine tartrate benefits for fat loss

L-carnitine tartrate is one of several forms of carnitine, and it’s the one most often used in sports and body-composition supplements. The tartrate salt is absorbed relatively quickly, which makes it a popular pre-workout form.

Here’s where the research actually lands on L-carnitine tartrate benefits for fat loss. A 2020 meta-analysis of 37 randomized trials found that carnitine supplementation produced a small but statistically significant reduction in body weight, BMI, and fat mass, with the effect most noticeable in people who were overweight.

The average was about a kilogram of weight over the study periods, above whatever diet and exercise were already doing.

Beyond the scale, L-carnitine tartrate has a few benefits that matter for women who train:

  • Recovery support. Several studies show reduced markers of muscle damage and less soreness after hard training at 2 grams daily.
  • Exercise performance. By supporting fat oxidation during exercise, it may help spare muscle glycogen in longer sessions.
  • Mitochondrial support. Carnitine levels in muscle tend to decline with age, which may be one reason fat oxidation gets harder after 40.

None of these are dramatic, but for a woman lifting three or four times a week, they add up.

Is 100 mg of L-carnitine effective?

This is a fair question, and I’d rather answer it honestly than dodge it. Most of the trials showing a benefit used 1 to 3 grams of L-carnitine per day. So is 100 mg of L-carnitine effective on its own? Not in the way those studies measured it.

At 100 mg you’re getting roughly what you’d find in a small serving of beef, and that amount by itself isn’t going to move body-fat numbers.

What 100 mg can do is contribute. In a multi-ingredient formula, small amounts of several compounds that each support a different part of metabolism can add up to more than any one alone. That’s different from claiming 100 mg is a clinical dose. It isn’t.

What CLA Does in Your Body

Conjugated linoleic acid is a naturally occurring fatty acid found in beef and dairy from grass-fed animals. Supplemental CLA is usually made from safflower oil and contains a mix of two isomers, one of which appears to influence fat storage.

Where L-carnitine works at the point of burning fat, CLA appears to work at the point of storing it. It’s thought to reduce the activity of lipoprotein lipase, an enzyme that helps fat cells take in fat from the bloodstream. Some studies also suggest it helps preserve lean mass during a diet.

Human trials using around 3 grams a day for 12 weeks or more show a modest reduction in body fat, on the order of a couple of pounds over several months. The effect is real but small, and lower doses haven’t shown measurable fat loss on their own.

Can You Take L-Carnitine and CLA Together?

Yes. There’s no known negative interaction between the two, and they’ve been studied together in a few trials without safety concerns beyond the mild digestive complaints each can cause individually.

More importantly, they’re complementary. Think of fat metabolism as a two-step process. First, fat has to be released from storage and transported into the mitochondria. That’s carnitine’s job. Second, you want to reduce how much new fat gets locked away in fat cells. That’s where CLA is studied.

Because they act on different steps, they don’t compete for absorption or for the same enzymes. Some early research also suggests CLA can increase carnitine palmitoyltransferase, the enzyme carnitine works with. That needs more human study, but it’s an interesting hint that the two belong together. Here’s a side-by-side comparison.

How to Time Them

If you’re taking standalone products at research doses, L-carnitine is absorbed better when insulin is present, so take it with a meal that has some carbohydrate, or 30 to 60 minutes before a workout with a small snack.

CLA is fat-based, so it absorbs best with food, and three 1-gram doses with meals is the pattern most studies used. Neither needs to be cycled, and both work better taken consistently. If you’re using a combined formula, follow the label directions.

Who Should Be Careful

Both are generally safe for healthy adults, but talk to a doctor first if you’re on blood thinners (L-carnitine may increase their effect), have a thyroid condition (high-dose carnitine may interfere with thyroid hormone activity), or have diabetes or insulin resistance (some high-dose CLA trials reported changes in insulin markers).

Pregnant or nursing women should skip both unless their doctor says otherwise.

Practical Tips for Getting More From Either Supplement

Neither L-carnitine nor CLA will do much without the basics in place. These are the things that make the biggest difference to whether a fat-loss supplement seems to work.

  1. Take them daily, not occasionally. Both need several weeks of consistent use to reach meaningful levels in tissue.
  2. Pair them with strength training. Carnitine is stored in muscle, and CLA’s lean-mass benefits only show up when you’re giving your body a reason to keep muscle. Two to four lifting sessions a week is the sweet spot.
  3. Eat enough protein. Roughly 0.7 to 1 gram per pound of goal body weight protects muscle in a deficit and keeps hunger in check. My protein calculator gives you a personal target.
  4. Do some easy morning walks. Low-intensity sessions rely heavily on fat oxidation, which is exactly the pathway carnitine supports.
  5. Check your iron and B12 if you’re low on energy. Carnitine can’t fix fatigue caused by a nutrient deficiency, and women 35 and up are often low on both.
  6. Give it 12 weeks and measure the right things. Use waist measurements and progress photos rather than only the scale, which can’t tell fat loss from muscle loss.

Both in One Capsule: L-Carnitine Tartrate + CLA

If you’d rather not juggle two bottles, one option is a formula that already includes both. LiveGood LEAN pairs 100 mg of L-carnitine tartrate with 100 mg of CLA powder (60 percent) in every two-capsule serving, alongside 650 mg of glucomannan for appetite support, 200 mg of berberine HCl and 100 mcg of chromium picolinate for glucose metabolism support, 100 mg of green tea extract standardized to 50 percent EGCG, and 100 mcg of methylcobalamin B12.

I’ll be direct about the amounts, because I said I would be earlier. 100 mg of L-carnitine and 100 mg of CLA are well below the multi-gram doses used in the trials I cited. On their own, they’re not clinical doses, and I wouldn’t tell you otherwise.

What LEAN is built around is the combination: fiber and caralluma for appetite control, berberine and chromium for blood sugar, and green tea catechins with carnitine, B12, and digestive enzymes for metabolic support. The carnitine and CLA are there as supporting pieces of that larger picture, not as the headline act.

It’s a vegan capsule, gluten-free, non-GMO, and third-party tested. Directions are two capsules 30 to 45 minutes before meals, up to three times daily, and it works best when taken every day since several ingredients need time to reach steady state.

LiveGood offers a 90-day money-back guarantee, which is long enough to run a proper 12-week trial alongside your training.

Final Thoughts

So, can you take L-carnitine and CLA together? Yes, safely, and there’s a decent case that they complement each other since one supports fat burning and the other is studied for reducing fat storage. Just keep your expectations grounded.

At meaningful doses, both produce small, gradual effects over months, and at small doses they’re supporting players.

The women I’ve seen get the best results treat supplements as the last five percent. Get your protein, lifting, steps, and sleep locked in first. Then, if you want an extra nudge, a sensible formula that combines these ingredients can be a reasonable addition.
